Do I have to speak only English when I am in the English program?

Yes! Every school has a “Language of Study” policy (some students are learning French so we can't call it an “English Only” Policy!). In our schools, you will be totally immersed in English while you are in the English program.

Students who break the “Language of Study” policy have to face the consequences. The policy is enforced everywhere in the school – the computer rooms, lunch rooms, lounges and of course classrooms. The penalty is usually a short suspension of ½ day to 2 days, depending on the location and the number of occasions that the student has broken the rule. You do not get to make this time up again.

Am I guaranteed to get the course I have selected after I register?

Usually, you can easily get the course that you want. However, there is a chance that you will not be able to join the course you selected. Some reasons that a course may not be available are:

•  There may not be enough students enrolled to make the course happen.

•  The class might be full and you might have to wait for another one to open.

•  Your English level might not be high enough for the course you have chosen.

•  The course you chose might have only one start date and you may have to wait for the next start date to enter that course.

You will be able to learn about different courses and availability once you begin communication with the school.

Can I change my schedule after I am there?

You can easily change your schedule from part time to full time just by paying the difference in fees for the lessons. However, if you want to change from full time to part time or from the Comprehensive program to another program, you should consider it like a cancellation and refund. Then you would have to re-register for the new program. Check the refund policy.

Can I start my program any time?

You can start to study in the Comprehensive English Program any Monday but there are set in-take days when the majority of new students start for each session. If you can register to start on one of these dates, it is usually best for you. It means that you are beginning with other new students so everyone is in the same position.

If you can't start on an in-take day, then we recommend that you start either the 2nd or 3rd  Monday of the session. The fourth week of a session can be slightly more difficult as students have review quizzes and presentations that week. Please check the calendar for start dates.

For programs other than the Comprehensive English Program, please contact your school of choice. Some programs have set start dates and cannot be changed.

If I want to take a break from my course to travel or just to rest, can I?

Yes, you can take approved course breaks. If possible you should inform the school of your planned breaks at least 4 weeks in advance. You can take 2 weeks of break for each 12 weeks of enrolment. However, you should think about the session dates and quiz dates so that you can successfully complete a level. Also, you need to be sure that your visa has enough time to allow you to delay your studies.

Can I transfer between GEOS schools in Canada without extra fees?

You can very easily transfer between GEOS schools and we encourage students to take advantage of our network here in Canada . You do not need to pay registration fees again. You may need to pay the difference in tuition as some cities have higher rates. You will also have to pay airport pick-up and homestay placement fees again if you request these services.

Do you have school activities after class?

Every school has different school activities on Friday afternoons. These activities are always reasonably priced and attendance is optional. Schools also organize day-trips at different times throughout the year for an additional fee for students. The activities are all selected to help students experience more of Canadian culture while using their language skills outside class. It is also a great opportunity to make international friends of course
