Homestay fees and arrangements vary slightly between schools. It is best to contact the school that you are interested in to learn their specific fees. Some schools offer both full and half-board while others offer only full board. What if I want to change host families after I arrive? If there is an issue and you are not satisfied with your homestay arrangement, you will meet with the Homestay Coordinator in your school to discuss options. Normally, we will move a student one time for no extra charge if the move is made in the first week of classes. There can be other exceptions as well. We offer excellent homestay counseling and our families are very supportive and kind. Everyone wants your experience to be the best ever. What kind of families does GEOS have? There are all different kinds of families in the GEOS Canada Homestay program. There are single parents, childless couples, retired couples, retired individuals, couples with small children, etc. We try to match our students with the best family for their hobbies and habits. Some things that are important to understand about Canadian families in general: they are often multicultural, many times there is at least one pet in the home; most families live in modest homes in middle-class neighborhoods, and bedrooms may be in the basement, on the main floor, or upstairs. One more thing…..you may have another international student in the home but they will not speak the same language as you! Can I cancel my homestay arrangements at any time? You are expected to give at least 2 weeks notice if you plan move before the end of your original booking with the family. If you have paid for 4 weeks and give 2 weeks notice, you will be refunded the extra 2 weeks. Similarly, if you want to stay on with your family longer than your original booking (but while you are still a student with GEOS), you have to notify the Homestay Coordinator as soon as possible but no later than 2 weeks before your scheduled move. We may have already booked a new student for that home. Can I stay with my host family after I finish studying with GEOS? No. Students are required to move from their GEOS homestay after they have finished studying with us. If you want to stay only one more week or so to be able to do some sightseeing before moving on, then that is fine. You need to let us know as soon as possible though so we can avoid double booking your family. Once you have decided which city you most want to visit, at that school's site, you select Registration Forms from the menu on the left. You complete the on-line form (GEOS Homestay Application) and submit it. It will go directly to the school. You will receive a reply from the school within 24 hours (and often sooner), unless you have submitted the form on a weekend or school holiday. In that case, it may take a little longer to get a reply from the school. Be sure to completely fill out the form. We need as much information as possible to match you with the best family for you. Are there other kinds of accommodations? Yes, students sometimes arrange room rentals, apartment hotels, apartment/house shares, and university dormitory rooms. Many students arrange homestay for the first 4 weeks and look for alternatives after they arrive (with the assistance of the school's staff). Please contact the school for details specific to that city.
